Overview

How family-based green cards work

Family-based immigration lets U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents sponsor certain relatives for green cards. Every case starts with Form I-130, filed by the U.S. relative.

Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens (spouses, unmarried children under 21 and parents of adult citizens) have no annual limit, so there is no visa bulletin wait. Other relatives fall into preference categories with waiting times.

Relatives abroad complete the process through the National Visa Center and an interview at the U.S. embassy, such as Islamabad. The sponsor must also file an affidavit of support.
